IAN HORSLEY

I am a UK based Chartered Physiotherapist with an MSc and PhD.
I worked at the UK Sports Institute (formally English Institute of Sport) as an Athlete Health Lead Physiotherapist, with responsibility for upper limb and dysfunctional breathing for 17 years, finishing in April 2026.
I am also Clinical Director of Back In Action Rehabilitation ltd in Wakefield where I work and oversee several other physiotherapists.
I have a Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine form the Faculty of Sports and Exercise medicine UK, an Independent prescriber and Injection therapist.
I have worked in professional sport for over 25 years including, England Rugby (England A, England 7s, Leeds Tykes, Rotherham Titans, Doncaster Knights, Samurai 7s), Rugby league (Toronto Wolfpack), Professional Football (The FA- consultant Physiotherapist, Barnsley FC, consultant physiotherapist). I have been to 4 Olympic Games as part of Team GBs HQ physiotherapy team and 2 Commonwealth Games.
I was Honorary Professor at the University of Salford in the School of Health and Society between 2022 and 2026., where I teach as part of the MSc in Sports Rehabilitation, and I am still research active.
I am a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and have served on Council, and the Education Committee, as well as being the Chair of the Education Committee of the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow rehabilitation (EUSSER).
I have a passion for physiotherapy, have experience in mentoring and specialize in problem solving within a musculoskeletal setting, with vast experience in management of shoulder dysfunction, where I have published extensively, and delivered teaching and lecturing both nationally and internationally.
In addition to this, I have an interest in the management of dysfunctional breathing and it's role in musculoskeletal issues and sub-optimal movement.
I offer consultations on upper limb injuries and advice regarding rehabilitation and return to sport, and provide clinical mentorship within the filed of musculoskeletal medicine.
