When i first attended a Physio session with Ian at Back in Action, It was around three months after giving birth my movement and mobility was extremely restricted at a time when i needed to be at my most agile. I was miserable and feeling very vulnerable when i arrived for my first treatment following a very public seizing up on the floor of a baby sensory class, The welcome and reassurance I received was excellent, above and beyond anything i'd experienced with any previous treatments. Ian took the time to explain to me, what had happened to my body during both the pregnancy and birth process, why it was having the impact it was and crucially, that it was correctable. The relief was overwhelming. Through six fortnightly sessions, I was able to build up my strength, regain my spinal flexibility and learn how to respond to any signs my body was giving me. The treatments included massage, exercises, muscle work on a roller and understanding the triggers to my back pain. We worked on practical everyday movements like bending forward over a cradle and picking up a car seat.
I would recommend both Back in Action and Ian for both the physical treatments but equally and probably even more importantly, the approach and patient care.

I was first introduced to Ian Horsley and Back in Action in 2004 through my grandmother, who at 80 years of age was being successfully treated by Ian for two hairline fractures in her spine, that had prior to her being seen by Ian, had been misdiagnosed as "age related arthritis".
Following a very difficult pregnancy where i was bedridden for over 3 months and a subsequently terrible labour( where I had been advised to not have a C section, as that would cut the only muscles stabilising my pelvis), My pelvis had not aligned itself correctly. I had been in tremendous pain for almost 6 months and was unable to walk properly due to suffering severe symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD).
I had seen many physiotherapists but had not seen any improvement and had been told categorically by both doctors and physiotherapists alike, that i would not be able to have more children but should not in any-case as i would very likely end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
At my first session, where i was carried into his treatment room, Ian diagnosed my symptoms and basically realigned my pelvis ( not the most pleasant sensation) and I started a long-term rehabilitation of my pelvic and core muscles to stabilise my pelvic area.
My rehabilitation took several months but when I was signed off I was over the moon.
Two years later the unthinkable happened and i found myself pregnant with twins when I unexpectedly miscarried one of the babies in the early stages. I was panic stricken as i was terrified of losing the other but also that my pelvis would give way early and i would end up in a wheel chair forever.
This time I was treated by Ian throughout my pregnancy and afterwards with up -to-the minute technologies and following rehabilitation I was the fittest I have ever been.
I introduced Ian to The Pelvic Partnership, an extremely worthwhile charity set up in the South of England for women suffering with the very misunderstood SPD.
Since this time I have revisited Ian for periodic check up's and for other injuries caused by my love of martial arts... Yes, indeed I am so "rehabilitated" that I lead a very active lifestyle and although I continue to undertake basic core strengthening exercises prescribed by Ian they are simply part of my day to day exercises.
I have recommended Ian to many colleagues, family and friends who all found the treatment he gave to be to the highest standard, including finding a physiotherapist for an acquaintance that could not get to his clinic but desperately needed help after suffering SPD until her child was 2 years old!!!
I can give nothing but glowing reports about Back in Action and especially Ian Horsley himself.. To date, nothing in my life has ever replaced the euphoric feeling of walking unaided out of his treatment room on my first visit.
Jonny Williams - Wales National Football Team, Sunderland AFC
‘Following my shoulder surgery, it was recommended that I should see Ian. I’m very pleased that I did as his expert knowledge and rehabilitation skills helped me recover from my surgery and be back playing first team football weeks ahead of schedule’
Joe Morley - Double extreme kayak world champion
I have been treated by Dr Ian Horsely post shoulder stability surgery and I have been extremely happy with his in-depth knowledge and experience in the field. I had complete confidence in him due to his reputation and this was completely backed up with my experience. My recovery has been swift and thorough thanks to following Ian’s rehab plan and hands on treatment. He’s also a top bloke.
David Devine- T12 and T13 Middle-distance British Paralympic Athlete
I have been getting treatment from Ian since 2011 and he is the main reason
why I stayed fit and healthy during the 2012 season which allowed me to win
double bronze in the London Paralympic Games! Since 2012 I have had numerous injury problems including ankle, hip and stomach issues.
Ian has been with me every step of the way nursing me back to full fitness and keeping the rehab sessions fun and motivating. I would highly recommend Ian to each and everyone and from my personal experience he is the best physio I have ever seen!
MG- Yoga and Pilates Teacher
Many years ago, I needed help with my left shoulder. Misdiagnosed by the NHS I needed expert help and came to see Dr Ian Horsley, who was recommend to be by a friend and it was the best move I ever made! Not only had I found someone who knows everything possible about the body but can help me with my strange, abnormal muscle formation. I was diagnosed by Ian with shoulder and scapular dyskinesis type 3, meaning I couldn't lift my arm without my shoulder almost sliding out of its socket! With the help of Ian and his amazing skills I was cured in no time, helping me so much that I could return to work as a Yoga and Pilates studio owner/teacher for the public and NHS. Since then Ian has put my hips and pelvis back in place, along with a few herniated disks ans so much more. If I didn't ave Ian and his team I do feel that I would have given up and relied on walking sticks or even a wheelchair to get about. I cannot recommend Back In Action enough... It is honestly the best move you'll ever make!
Vito Mannone- Premiership Professional Goalkeeper
A big thank to upper limb Physio specialist Ian Horsley, a true professional who worked me really hard but helped me achieve a fast comeback from my nasty elbow injury. Really enjoyed working with you. Thanks.
Ben Swift-Professional Track and Road Cyclist Team Sky
Being a professional cyclist, crashes and injury’s are unfortunately common and all part of the job. Its how you over come these that is important. I have worked very closed with Dr Ian Horsley over the last number of years, rehabbing me from knee and shoulder injuries. When these injuries do happen I know that I am in very good hands with his professionalism and forward thinking, I am always confident that I will be back on the bike as fast and strong as possible.
Drew Walker-2014 JNR Mr Britain Runner Up
Picture on the left is September 2014 and picture on the right is September 2015. In March 2015 I had a full pec major rupture at the tendon which had to be reattached in surgery 2 weeks later. So the picture on the right is 5 months post surgery. I know the expression 'couldn't do it without him/her' gets thrown around a lot BUT I literally would not have done this show had I not been referred to Dr. Ian Horsley, he shaved 6 weeks off my recovery from my surgery. He got my range of motion back quick and gave me the confidence to start rebuilding in the gym less than 8 weeks post surgery. So like I said I would not have competed without his help!! Although I believe he has some experience in torture methods he is fantastic!
Luke Storrs- Team Food Tech Athlete
I literally couldn't have recovered at the speed I did with such vast improvements to my physique with out Ian's rehab. I believe my surgeon said because of the tailored rehab provided by Ian I was signed off 7 weeks earlier than I should have been!!
Mohamed Abouelghar- Professional Squash Player, Egypt
I'm doing all the work Ian gave me and i can't tell you how much it helped me. I never have niggles and my body always feel strong. Recently I won big tournament recently and my rankings are improving so much.
Sarah McPhee – GB Wheelchair Basketball
Without the treatment I received from Ian, I can safely say that competing at London 2012’s Paralympics may not have been possible! 6 months before the Games I was diagnosed with a SLAP tear in my right shoulder, but with a fantastic pre-habilitation programme which was devised and overseen by Ian, I was able to realise my dream of representing Great Britain at a Paralympic Games. Ian is undeniably a visionary, and his unquestionable knowledge of the shoulder and its mechanics is second to none. I can’t thank Ian enough and would (and have!!) highly recommend him for any shoulder related issues no matter how big or small.
Jamie Langley - Rugby Player for Bradford Bulls
I have been receiving treatments from Ian and his team for over 10 years now and I have always received a 1st class and professional service. I would highly recommend Back in Action physio to anyone who may be struggling with any injury or aches and pains that you need getting rid of! They will have you as good as new in no time.
Holly Bleasdale - British Olympic Pole Vaulter
I have been doing pole vault for 4 years and the later 2 years I have spent working alongside Ian Horsley at the English Institute of Sport in Manchester. Pole Vaulting is very demanding on many different parts of the body, and I was very lucky to have such a patient, multi- knowledgeable physiotherapist helping me throughout 2011 and most important 2012 Olympic year.
A very professional physio, of whom I would trust and recommend for any future treatments both for myself and others. Ian was a vital part of my team and I owe him great thanks for keeping me in one piece to allow me to fulfil my dream of representing Great Britain in an Olympic Games.
Jo Parker - GB Table Tennis
When I got injured I went to Back in Action. I felt immediately calmed by the friendly yet professional atmosphere there. The treatment I received was great and I saw results even from the first consultation which meant I wasted no time getting back into training.
Jenna Downing - World Champion Inline Skater
I have been a patient of Ian’s now for over ten years and I wouldn’t see any other physio. Time after time Ian has enabled me to fully recover from injury and return to competing, even at times when I thought there was no going back. Ian helped me to go on to win the British Championships after I ruptured the ligaments in my ankle just days before the competition. He is a true miracle worker! Furthermore, Ian goes to all lengths at Back in Action to support his patients in every way he can and his friendly, welcoming approach never goes unnoticed. I know I can always count on Ian to get me back to full strength and I am extremely grateful for his support and assistance over the years
Kelly Sibley - Table Tennis
Ian has been treating me on and off for about 3 years now. I've visited his clinic on several occasions and I think it's brilliant. I have been struggling with an on going hip injury for about 5 years now and with the help and support of Ian and his staff at back-in-action I've managed to compete in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and also I fulfilled my dream in representing Team GB at the 2012 London Olympic Games
Laura Massaro - Professional Squash Player, World Ranked Number 2, British and European Number 1,2013 Squash Player of the Year and World Squash Champion 2014
I have been having treatment from Ian through the EIS North-West for the past few years. He has got me out of some sticky situations where it has been touch and go on me making it to my next ranking squash event. He stays calm and is clear thinking which is very settling to know and have as an athlete. He is always very thorough in our treatments and I am told of the problem and given a clear plan of action which I feel is exactly what I need for my personality.
Without Ian's expertise, calmness and rehab programmes I would not have taken part in many of my squash events and I feel it would have been far more likely I would have had several re occurrences of niggling injuries.
I would highly recommend Back in Action and Ian for any physio needs whether you are a professional athlete or amateur.
Craig Sedgwick- Head Physiotherapist Barnsley Football Club
Ian is a consultant physiotherapist that Barnsley Football Club used for complex injuries. Ian is a fantastic physiotherapist with a wealth of skills and knowledge that extend beyond the normal. I would highly recommend him to any one suffering with discomfort as he has helped many of our footballers recover from injury. I will continue to use Ian’s expertise as it has been invaluable to our physiotherapy practice in returning players to fitness.
Jim O'Brien- Professional Footballer
Ian treated me in conjunction with the medical team at Barnsley football club for a dislocated shoulder. Ian was recommended to me by the physiotherapist at Barnsley football club because of Ian’s extensive research and knowledge in shoulder injuries. Also, with his sporting background we felt this would aid my speedy recovery. After several consultations and treatments I was able to return to football with no problems. Thanks Ian.
Sarah Stevenson MBE - High Performance Coach GB Taekwondo
The Back in Action Clinic was an added bonus in my Olympic preparation. When visiting family and friends in Doncaster, I was still able to get World Class treatment when I was away from my national Centre in Manchester. An ACL, knee reconstruction, wasn’t going to stop me and Back in Action, definitely helped towards my dreams of representing my Country at London 2012.
Audley Harrison M.B.E. - Olympic Gold Medallist, European Champion
Ian was recommended to me and I can honestly say what a 'Gem' find. I had a rib issue that needed work before one of my fights and Ian identified what the issue was, and also found a solution in how I could rectify the problem long term. Ian was very knowledgeable and had an easy going demeanor, which made me open up to him and relax. Highly recommended...
Katarina Johnson-Thompson- GB Atheletics
I am a heptathlete, which can be very demanding on the body, over the years Ian has looked after me in the rehabilitation and prevention of injury. I suffered from patella tendonapathy in 2010, with Ian's help and guidance I fully recovered from my knee procedure, coming back stronger and was able to follow my dreams of competing in the 2012 Olympic Games. Ian is very precise, patient and professional. I trust and recommend him completely.
Alex Goode- Rugby Player for Saracens F.C.
Ian was a great help when I injured my shoulder last year. His experience was invaluable in assisting the Saracens medical staff to get me back playing for club and country quickly.
Linda Wales- Montaineer
Ian Horsley at Back in Action has been my physiotherapist for a year now following an accident on my shoulder in 2013. From my initial meeting with him right through to the present time he's been professional, supportive, informative and generally my super hero. I'm a rock and high altitude mountain climber so to not be able to use a shoulder is unimaginable and I was devastated when I knew it was pretty serious. But following the operation with my surgeon, who Ian recommended, I have spent months with Ian regaining strength and movement and it's so strong now that I can climb again. I have my surgeon and Ian to thank for this miracle and I am continuing my sessions with Ian to ensure my shoulder moves forward and not back. If anything now I feel like I have a bionic shoulder and continue to soak up every ounce of information and advice that Ian shares with me. I don't foresee a time in the future when Ian's not part of my training and with so many challenges ahead, it's good to have someone I trust 100% on the team. Thanks for everything Ian, I really appreciate it.
Sophie Pugh- Powerboat Racer "heightsofabraham.com"
Ian has been treating me for over 12 years now. He has helped me with numerous rowing, sailing and powerboat racing injuries. From massage, manipulation and acupuncture, to referring me to the best shoulder surgeon, i have never been in better hands!
Rupert Pugh- Powertboat Racer "heightsofabraham.com"
Ian knows exactly the correct treatment, rehabilitation and exercises to get us back on the water in time for the next race.
Mark Johnson- WMACi Budapest 2014 M45 Pole Vault Winner
As a masters athlete, I always find Ian to be very knowledgable and able to swiftly and accurately diagnose conditions/injuries. His wealth of experience enables him to deliver excellent and effective treatment/rehabilitation plans. I would have no hesitation in recommending Ian for sporting and non sporting conditions.
Jo Racle MCSP
I can't thank Ian enough for finding the root cause of my chronically unstable left ankle. After years of playing sport at a good level and accumulating low grade injuries, my left ankle was stopping me maintaining a reasonable level of running fitness. Ian dealt with the deeper underlying issues rather than the presenting superficial symptoms, which was different to all previous clinicians I have seen. I can now run comfortably, with minimal aftermath, and am delighted.
Mel Lowther- Junior National Track Cycle Champion
I am lucky enough to live locally to the Back in Action clinic and have been receiving treatment from Ian for around 4 years after a recommendation. Ian diagnosed a rotor cuff injury even when MRI scans didn't pick up the problem. Because of this I was able to have an operation and can now ride pain free. With Ian helping me with rehabilitation after a couple of operations I have been able to get on my bike quickly with no reoccurring problems. I see Ian with any injury I trust him and the guys at Back in Action to get a diagnosis and have me back on my bike as soon as possible.
David Tweed- England Amputee Footballer
Over quite a few years now Ian's expertise, treatment and advice has help to managed all my niggles and ongoing conditions. Keeping them in check has enabled me to perform, continually, at as high a level as possible with some great personal & team results along the way. I would highly recommend that anyone with a injury or issue book an appointment with Ian.
